of Ann Arbor, winner of the MSUAA's Outstanding Philanthropist Award.
Arnold established the Fred Arnold Professorship in Wood Products
Sales, Marketing and Manufacturing Endowment Fund in MSU's College
of Agriculture and Natural Resources.
Jeffrey N. Cole, '70, former president and CEO of Ferrous
Processing and Trading Company, Detroit, MI, winner of the MSUAA's
Outstanding Philanthropist Award. Cole serves as chair of the Honors
College Director's Advisory Council and has established a number
of funds, including the Jeffrey N. Cole Honors College Fund, the
Jeffrey N. Cole Visiting Lectureship, the Jeffrey N. Cole Honors
College Study Abroad Fund.
Delia Z. F. Koo, M.S. '54, former professor of mathematics
at Eastern Michigan University and widely published in the field,
winner of the MSUAA's Outstanding Philanthropist Award. Delia has
generously made possible the upcoming Delia Koo International Academic
Center, the new academic wing and library of MSU's International
Center.
(Colonel, retired) Paul L. Barrows, '66, DVM '67, named chief
of the U.S. Army Veterinary Corps and director of the Dept. of Defense
Veterinary Service Activity in 1995, was the senior military veterinarian
responsible for more than 420 veterinarians and 1,200 warrant officers,
non-commissioned officers, soldiers and civilians.

Linda Chambliss, M.D. '80, assistant director of maternal-fetal
medicine at the Maricopa County Medical Center in Phoenix, AZ, and
a clinical professor of obstetrics and gynecology at the University
of Arizona School of Medicine. She won the "Teacher of the
Year" award and the National Faculty Award for Excellence in
Resident Teaching.
Richard Cordray, '81, a former MSU Marshall Scholar, is an
Ohio political leader and attorney specializing in appellate and
constitutional law. He clerked for two members of the U.S. Supreme
Court was was the Ohio State Solicitor from 1993-94.
Jack P. DeBoer, '52, chairman and CEO of the Candlewood Hotel
Company, Inc. DeBoer founded the Residence Inn and co-founded Summerfield
Hotel Corp. in 1988.
Anthony J. Hopp, '67, M.A. '68, chairman and CEO of Campbell-Ewald,
Michigan's oldest and largest advertising agency, helped the company
become the nation's 13th largest agency with clients like Chevrolet,
the U.S. Navy, ACDelco, Pier 1 Imports, and Michelin.

Lt. Gov. Dick Posthumus, '72, Lt.
Governor of Michigan since 1988 and Senate Majority Leader from
1991-98. He sponsored Proposal A, which cut property taxes dramatically,
as well as other legislation aimed at creating charter schools and
Renaissance Zones in decaying inner cities and rural areas.
Donald W. Riegle, Jr., MBA '61, U.S. Senator from 1976-94
and current deputy chairman of Shandwick, Americas. Previously he
served four terms in the U.S. House of Representatives and served
four terms. He authored the best-seller, O Congress, and served
as an adjunct professor at MSU.
James Harlan Steele, DVM '41, professor emeritus of the University
of Texas, School of Public Health, was a worldwide medical pioneer
widely credited with pioneering the U.S. public health system. Steele
founded the American Board of Public Health Veterinarians (now the
American College of Veterinary Preventive Medicine) in 1950 and
was vice president of the American Association of World Health from
1965-85.
James C. Votruba, '68, MA '70, Ph.D. '74, former MSU vice
provost for university outreach, currently serves as president of
Northern Kentucky University. Since he became president in 1997,
NKU has been the fastest growing university in the state.

�66, president and CEO of auto supplier New Venture Gear, Troy,
has been named vice chairman for the Venture Companies Worldwide,
Frasier.
Carl Johnson,�51, co-founder
of Johnson, Johnson & Roy, Inc., Ann Arbor, the largest landscape
architectural firm in Michigan and fifth largest in the U.S. and
professor emeritus of Landscape Architecture at the University
of Michigan, Ann Arbor, has won the ASLA (American Society of Landscape
Architects) Medal, their highest honor.

software products and IT professional services marketing manager
for Compuware Corporation, Farmington Hills, has been named senior
copywriter for Smith-Winchester, Inc., Southfield.
Eustorgio Mendez,
Ph. D. �76, a retired biology professor and a longtime field/laboratory
scientist with famed "microbe-hunting" teams at the Gorgas
Memorial Laboratory, has won the national decoration of the Order
of Mamuel Amador Guerrero by President Mireya Moscoso of the Republic
of Panama.

Inc., represents the State of Michigan at the 22,000-member Defense
Research Institute, the nation�s largest association of civil litigation
defense lawyers.

Illinois University-Edwardsville (SIUE), has been named executive
director of the Labor Management Committee of the Leadership Council

to the largest group in television. His syndicated shows include
hits like Buffy The Vampire Slayer, Ally McBeal and Divorce

- Larry Thompson, M.A. 69, longtime
partner at King & Spalding, Atlanta, GA, has been named
by President George W. Bush as U.S. Deputy Attorney General.
- Karen Steiner, 87, a Vacaville,
CA, has starred in many TV ads and has also had roles on shows
like Baywatch, Team Knightrider, Vengeance Unlimited and The
Pretender.
- Andy Laursen, 80, is co-founder
and vice president for product development of Phone.com. He
helped pioneer the technology which allows web users to surf
the Internet from a cell phone.

Kentucky, based in Georgetown, KY. Convis is the first non-Japanese

English professor at Central Michigan, wrote the libretto for
William Bolcoms song cycle From The Diary of Sally Hemings,
which premiered in March at the Library of Congress, Washington

has been named NPRs White House correspondent. His reporting

woman aviator. Wells and Amelia Earhart co-founded the Ninety
Nines, the worlds oldest association of female pilots.

She previously served as a state representative (1979-90), as
a state senator (1991-94), and in the U.S. Congress (1997-2001).

Spencer Abraham, 74,
former U.S. Senator from Michigan, has been confirmed as U.S.
Secretary of Energy in the cabinet of President George W. Bush.
Abraham was senator for one term (1995-2001).

Karen Dennis, 77,
M.A. 79, was head coach of the U.S. Olympics womens
track and field team in Sydney, Australia. Dennis is the head
track coach at UNLV.

Patricia (Wilde) Orlowitz,
79, deputy director of the Center for Private Business Reform,
a nonprofit group partly funded by the U.S. Agency for International
Development. Orlowitz spent the last three years in Moldovia helping
arrange for land that had been confiscated by the Communist regime
to be transferred to their rightful owners.

is host of Celebrity Homes, a nightly show on the
E! Entertainment Television network. Last fall, she spent two
two-day stints as the co-host of LIVE with Regis,
the popular syndicated morning show, and is said to be a leading
candidate to replace former co-host Kathie Lee Gifford.

Steve Akers, 80,
was the founder and CEO of Spring Tide Networks, an Internet high-speed
networking company that Lucent Technologies bought in September
for $1.3 billion.

John Costello, MBA 70,
president and CEO of MVP.com, a web-based company selling sporting
goods and apparel. His board includes Michael Jordan, John Elway,
and Wayne Gretzky. Previously he was president of AutoNation Inc.,
the worlds largest automotive retailing and rental company.

Becky Iverson, former MSU
golfer, was on the 2000 U.S. Solheim Cup team. She earned 2 and
½ points for the U.S. team last September in Scotlands
Loch Lomond golf course. Iverson ranked among the Top Ten Americans
on the LPGA tour.
