| Kay Koplovitz, Cable Television Pioneer |
Kay Koplovitz, a 1968 graduate of Michigan State University's College of Communication Arts and Sciences, will be the keynote speaker. Koplovitz will discuss her pioneering role as a female executive in the male-dominated cable television industry.
Koplovitz is a visionary woman who led the emergence of cable television from the backcountry of America to challenge the mighty broadcast networks for coveted audiences. She is the founder of the USA Network, television's first advertiser-supported basic cable network, and was the first female network president in television history. Under her direction, USA launched the SCI FI Channel and became one of the industry's top ranked networks. She was also the first to negotiate cable rights to major league sports including Major League Baseball, the National Basketball Association and the National Hockey League. Koplovitz now owns her own corporation, which provides media advisory services to major corporations, sports organizations, advertisers and distributors. She is the author of Bold Women, Big Ideas: Learning to Play the Entrepreneurial Game, which she wrote to inform and inspire women to create wealth through equity.
Koplovitz holds a Masters degree in Communications from Michigan State University, is a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of the University of Wisconsin, and holds an honorary doctorate from St. Johns University. She was appointed in 1998 by President Bill Clinton to be Chairperson of the National Women's Business Council, the influential advisory board of women-owned businesses. She has been a member of many corporate boards including Liz Claiborne, Oracle, and Nabisco. A native of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Koplovitz is married to private investor, William C. Koplovitz, Jr. |
