Keynote Speaker
Ann Compton
National Correspondent for ABC News Radio
Ms.
Ann Compton is now covering her sixth President for ABC news
in a career that has taken her to the White House, Capitol Hill
and through seven presidential campaigns, from the height of
the cold war to the internet revolution.
On
September 11, 2001, Ann was the only broadcast reporter allowed
to remain onboard Air Force One during the dramatic hours when
President Bush was unable to return to Washington. Her
reports during the crisis were cited as ABC News received the
prestigious Silver Baton Alfred I. DuPont Columbia University
award for its coverage. Ann was also on the team that received
an Emmy and a Peabody award for ABC News' September 11th reporting.
One year later, she was with President Bush at Ground Zero when
families of victims were allowed down into the excavation site
for the first time.
In
2000, Compton became Chief Washington Correspondent for ABC News.com
where she anchored a daily political column On
Background. Currently
she holds the title of National Correspondent for ABC Radio News,
heard daily on hundreds of ABC Radio stations as she covers the
White House.
As
a White House Correspondent, Ms. Compton has traveled all fifty
states and across Europe, the Middle East, South America, Africa,
and Asia with presidents, vice-presidents and the first ladies. Twice
during campaigns, Ms. Compton was invited to serve as a panelist
for presidential debates (1988 and 1992) and she was assigned
as a floor reporter at the 1976 Republican and Democratic Conventions.
In 1987, Ms. Compton was the chairperson of the Radio Television
Correspondents' Association, the governing board for 2,500 broadcasters
covering Washington, D.C. She
is a member of the Board of Freedom Forum Center for Media Studies
in New York.
Compton
received the JANUS Award in May 1987 for her report, "Tax
Shelter," which aired on Nightline. In the year 2000, the
Society of Professional Journalists inducted Ann Compton into
the Journalism Hall of Fame. However, Ann says her most valued
award is a golden statuette from the National Mother's Day Committee
naming her Mother of the Year in 1988.
Ms.
Compton is married to Dr. William Hughes, a physician in Washington,
D.C. and they are the parents of three sons and a daughter.
