Blij, Ph.D.
A. The
MSUAA is pleased to welcome author, professor, and television personality
H.J. de Blij to Kaleidoscope
2003. Dr. de Blij specializes in geopolitical and environmental issues
and will discuss the challenges facing the United States at this time
in history. Dr. de Blij will use his trademark maps to explain the geographic
background of major events in the world.
H.J. de
Blij served as Geography Editor for ABC�s "Good Morning America"
for seven years. In 1996, he joined NBC News as Geography Analyst; and
his Geography series "The Power of Place" aired for several
years on PBS. Dr. de Blij has published more than 30 books, including
scientific, educational and trade titles and over 100 articles in scholarly
and popular literature. A member of the Association of American Geographers
and an Honorary Fellow of the American Geographical Society, he was elected
in 1980 to the National Geographic Society�s Committee for Research and
Exploration.

Pat Lamison
is an MSU Extension Educator with the Ingham County office. She has been
on staff for more than 25 years offering a variety of educational programs
on topics related to family money management, consumer issues, food, nutrition
and safety. She also supervises Building Strong Families, is an in-home
parenting educator and a breast-feeding peer counselor.
Improve
Body Posture, Strength and Flexibility Through Pilates

You see it in magazines and on infomercials�the exercise of
choice for professional athletes and dancers is Pilates. Pilates is a
systematic series of exercises designed to re-educate posture, enhance
body awareness, and produce dynamic strength and flexibility. This workshop
will give you a basic understanding of the concepts of how Pilates works
and an introduction to some of the exercises.
Sue Forbes
has been in the fitness industry for 20 years as a personal trainer, fitness
instructor and consultant. She holds a Bachelor of Arts from Michigan
State University and has completed half of her coursework for her Master
of Science as a physician assistant at Central Michigan University. She
is certified by the National Academy of Sports Medicine, American College
of Sports Medicine, Seattle Sports Medicine Clinic, ACE, and Speedo Water
Personal Training. She is the owner of the fitness company Ultimate
Body Works.
Journaling:
Writing Your Life Stories
Rita and
Susan Luks

Everyone has a story to tell. This mother-daughter duo have been writing
their stories since childhood. Susan concentrates on journaling and Rita
specializes in memoirs. They will tell some of their stories and share
strategies they find helpful in developing them. You will leave the session
with a list of personal ideas to begin writing your own story, a sense
of how to tell it, and a handmade card to record it on.
Rita Luks,
an MSU graduate, taught elementary school for 32 years. She currently
works with elementary teacher interns at MSU. Susan Luks, has a Bachelor
of Science in Computer Science and a Master of Arts in English. Collectively,
these women have been journaling, writing stories, and thinking about
writing for roughly three million years�in story time.

the American Academy of Ophthalmology. He has been published in numerous
medical journals and appears regularly on television and in newspapers.

of how reflexology is practiced as well as an opportunity to develop an
appreciation for your hands and feet. In addition, you will learn some
simple reflexology techniques. Reflexology is a gentle, non-invasive healing
art, which relieves tension, promotes nerve and blood supply and helps
nature balance the body. This is why many people are choosing this healing
art to enhance their overall health and to renew their energy.

has a Bachelor of Science in Health Education from Michigan State University
and training
in reflexology through the International Institute of Reflexology. Tricia
has her own reflexology practice in the Lansing area and shares lifestyle
philosophies for wellness and balance of body, mind and spirit.
The
Intoxicating Wonders of Gardening

Mary McLellan�s passion for gardening will come through when she presents
her program on creative ways
to develop your garden. Ms. McMcLellan�s infectious enthusiasm inspires
her audience to indulge themselves in the intoxicating wonders of gardening.
Mary�s passion
for gardening led her to abandon a successful career in business administration
to pursue a degree in horticulture. In 1991 Mary graduated from MSU and
has been on the faculty of the MSU Department of Horticulture ever since.
She is Co-Executive Director of the Horticulture Gardening Institute which
is a joint initiative of the MSU Master Gardener Program, the MSU Department
of Horticulture and the MSU Global Institute. Every May, Mary hosts a
tour through the spring gardens of England concluding with the world famous
Chelsea Flower Show. In 2003, Mary will also host a tour to the Gardens
of the Pacific Northwest and a special tour of the Gardens and Villas
of Italy.

women�s issues. He has supported many local charities including the Lansing
Food Bank, Council Against Domestic Assault and Locks of Love. Each year
he has produced a "Benefit Fashion Show" for the local chapter
of SADD. Both of his Aveda Concept Salons have won numerous awards for
Longevity. Both Steven and his staff have been featured in newspapers
and magazines for innovative ideas in hair cutting and salon design.

Rad Jones
is an Academic Specialist in the School of Criminal Justice at Michigan
State University. He is engaged in outreach instruction and is the director
of the school�s award winning Master of Science Criminal Justice Internet
degree program. Mr. Jones is retired as a Special Agent in Charge, US
Secret Service after a 21 year career. He is an alumnus member of the
US State Department Overseas Security Advisory Council.

is a silent disease that is often unrecognized until the person suffers
a fracture. Osteoporotic fractures cost billions of dollars per year.
The good news is that the risk for osteoporosis can be reduced through
prevention and treatment. Dr. Carol Beals will discuss significant risk
factors and diagnosis and treatment options for Osteoporosis.
Carol A. Beals, M.D. is founder of the Beals Institute in Lansing and
specializes in arthritis, autoimmune disease and osteoporosis. Dr. Beals
is a Board Certified Rheumatoloist and is an Assistant Professor at Michigan
State University Medical School, Internal Medicine Division. She earned
her B.R.S. N. from MSU as well as her M.D. from the College of Human Medicine.
Dr. Beals has traveled extensively outside the United State to lecture
on Rheumatology.

This session is based on the unshakable belief that everyone is born
to be creative, and that we spend most of our lives putting a lot of energy
into trying to hide it! Nancy McCray will spend time discussing what "creativity"
is, how we develop it, and why we are afraid of our own creativity, while
envying it in others. Nancy will discuss how talent and creativity are
not the same thing.
A fiber
artist for most of her life, Nancy McRay is devoted to developing creativity
in individuals and in communities. Formerly the Fine Artist Coordinator
for East Lansing Recreation and Arts, Nancy has also served on many community
arts boards. Her favorite project was "The Weaving Room," in
which she invited members of the Greater Lansing community to weave a
room size tapestry over a one month period. Currently she is working on
"The Pink Scarf Project", organizing local knitters to make
and sell pink scarves to raise money for the Susan B. Komen Foundation.

From religious rituals to nightclub entertainment, Middle Eastern dance
has evolved to become a celebration of womanhood.

Kepler is the Artistic Director of the Habibi Dancers, a local non-profit
organization. The Habibi Dancers educate and entertain the public regarding
Middle Eastern culture through music and dance. Ms. Kepler is a professional
dancer and dance instructor who has been teaching in the Lansing area
for 18 years. She offers a variety of classes including ballet, jazz,
acrobatics, ballroom and Middle Eastern dance. Ms. Garnett has served
as regional representative for the Michigan Dance Council and is committed
to excellence in all areas of dance.
