25th Anniversary Year! August 23-September 6, 2008 Alumni Lifelong Education
This two-week lifelong education program takes you on a rare adventure to Oxford, “city of dreaming spires” and to the University of Oxford, famous as a great center of learning since the 12th century. Once England’s capital, Oxford is located in the heart of England just 50 miles northwest of London.
Michigan State University, the University of Iowa, and Oxford’s Department for Continuing Education have joined together to offer this outstanding lifelong learning opportunity. Open to all adults, each participant enrolls in one personal enrichment noncredit course of study taught by Oxford tutors. Each course has its own field trips and group excursions are planned for the entire group of participants.
2008 group excursions include visits to the Windsor Castle, the oldest and largest occupied castle in the world and official residence of Her Majesty the Queen; Stonehenge for a special access "at dusk" and "up-close" viewing which allows participants an opportunity to walk among the stones; and an optional weekend excursion to Bath.
2008 courses include:
1.) The American Revolution Through British Eyes: 1763-1783; 2.) Tudor Politics, Culture, Religion, and Society 1509-1603; 3.) Great Britons and Their Houses; and 4.) The Normans in European History.
There will be ample time during the two weeks and at mid-program weekend break to enjoy breathtaking architecture, art, and gardens of many of the university's 39 colleges, explore the historic town of Oxford, or visit the surrounding countryside. The city of Oxford offers a diversity of museums, bookshops, theatres, restaurants, pubs, shops, and natural settings to explore.
ODYSSEY TO OXFORD TESTIMONIALS "If only I could speak 14 languages, I could give you a very special thank-you for each day we were on our Oxford trip. Everything about it was wonderful: our leaders, our tutors, our courses, our expeditions, our fellow students, my room, and the sinfully delicious food! Put it this way. On a scale of 1-10, this trip was a 15!" - 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2007 participant
