Evening College History and Mission
Since 1951, the Michigan State University Evening College has been providing the Greater Lansing community and Michigan State University alumni, friends, students, faculty and staff with evening and weekend noncredit university level and quality courses. In 1988, Evening College became part of Alumni Lifelong Education and the Michigan State University Alumni Association. Evening College courses are open to all adults and provide intellectual, social, and cultural learning experiences. A college degree is not required to attend Evening College courses.
The mission of Evening College is to offer adult students timely, interesting and challenging, high quality, noncredit learning experiences at the university level. In addition to this, Evening College provides a unique curriculum testing arena for faculty to try new instructional content and formats, and test ideas for potential credit courses. It also provides faculty with the opportunity to improve their skills in teaching adult learners. Evening College serves as a learning laboratory for many adults considering returning to university study who wish to become familiar again with the classroom environment, gain confidence and acquire certain study skills.
Focusing on personal enrichment, Evening College offers a diverse selection of noncredit courses. Courses are co-sponsored by colleges and administrative units at Michigan State University. Courses are taught with the assistance of MSU faculty and staff and professionals from the community. There are no grades, transcripts, credits, or examinations involved. Fees for these courses vary.
