Clubs, Constituent Groups and National Board Members:
It was a busy summer for regional club events and activities! I had
the pleasure of attending many of the events that started in late springs
and greet club board members, their guests and families. The complete

Over 120 people enjoyed a BBQ by the bay at San Phillippe Park in Tampa
- more than half were first-time attendees to an alumni club event sponsored
by the MSU Alumni Club of Tampa Bay. About 20 had not RSVP'd
for the event, and "walked up" to attend to hear Assistant Head Coach
Jim McElwain (Coach "Mac") Incoming Honors College Freshman Chris
Marshall brought his entire family to the event (mom and dad are alums).
Several generations - including Bob and Celice Parkhurst, who graduated
in the '40's - attended. A lot of younger families with children were
present.

The MSU Alumni Club of Bay County held its third annual Cruise on
the Bay for scholarships on Thursday, June 26. More than 100 people
enjoyed dinner and dancing to live music while raising funds to support
undergraduates attending Michigan State University. The event took
place on a special charter boat that cruised through the Saginaw Bay for
several hours. There are 1,577 MSU alumni in Bay County; 215 are members
of the MSUAA

The MSU Alumni Club of Benzie County held its annual spring meeting
and scholarship dinner on Thursday, June 12. More than 70 people attended
to hear keynote speaker Jeff Armstrong, Dean of the College of Agriculture
and Natural Resources. The club awarded two scholarships in the amount
of $500.00 each. There are 404 Spartans in Benzie County; 53 are members
of the MSUAA

The MSU Alumni Club of Berrien County held its annual Steak Fry on
Tuesday, June 10. This highly popular event attracted more than 400
people from as far away as South Bend, IN. Among the guests
to attend were Head Football Coach John L. Smith, Head Hockey Coach Rick
Comley, and Executive Director Keith A. Williams. All proceeds from
this event support scholarships for students from Berrien County.

The MSU Alumni Club of Grand Traverse held its annual golf outing
and scholarship dinner on Friday, May 16 at the Traverse City Country Club.
The club awarded 6 scholarships to incoming MSU freshmen, each valued at
$1,000.00. The club's scholarship endowment had grown
to a value of $123,000.00. Over the last 23 years, the club has awarded
more than 112 scholarships to Grand Traverse undergraduates. Dave
Walker, an Communication Arts graduate, and news anchor for the NBC TV affiliate,
served as Master of Ceremonies. He also served as "auctioneer", helping
to raise several thousand more dollars for the fund. Attendance for
the golf outing was down a bit this year (no "celebrity" MSU coaches were
able to attend), but more than 100 people attended the dinner.

The MSU Alumni Club of Dayton Oho, celebrated the completion of its
20,000.00 Scholarship Endowment at a special dinner and wine tasting event
on Saturday, April 26, at the popular Jay's Seafood restaurant.
30 guests dined on a five course meal, with special wines selected for the
event. There are 713 Spartans in the Dayton club boundaries; 73 are
members of the MSUAA.

The MSU Alumni Club of Eastern Wayne County held its annual dinner
meeting and scholarship reception on Wednesday, May 14, at the Pointe BBQ
on Warren in Detroit. Four students received scholarships from club
president Mark Makoski. There are 7,750 alumni in the Eastern
Wayne County club area; 753 are MSUAA members.

The MSU Alumni Club of Kalamazoo County held its 31st Annual BBQ
at MSU's Kellogg Biological Station on Thursday, June 19. This signature
event - with proceeds to support scholarships and the Sparty restoration
project - attracted more than 400 people. Guest included Head Football
Coach John L. Smith, First Lady Joanne McPherson, New Assistant Head Men's
Basketball Coach Dwayne Stephens, and Executive Director Keith A. Williams.
More than $3,000.00 was raised through a special auction for the club's
contribution to the Sparty Restoration Fund. There are more than 4,000
alumni in Kalamazoo County; 527 are MSUAA members.

The MSU Alumni Club of Muskegon County held its 13th Annual Don Arnson
golf outing on Friday, June 13. More than 100 golfers and guests participated
and enjoyed a prime rib dinner with new Assistant Head Football Coach Jim
McElwain as the keynote speaker. There are 2,110 Alumni in Muskegon
county; 241 are members of the MSUAA.

The MSU Alumni Club of Oakland County held an exclusive reception
event for new Head Football Coach John L. Smith on Friday, May 23rd at the
Farmington Hills Manor. More than 250 guests attended the event just
before the Memorial Day weekend. The Oakland County club provided complimentary
hors d�oeuvres. There are 40, 490 Spartans in Oakland County;
4,954 are members of the MSU Alumni Association

The MSU Alumni Club of Orange County held its highly popular annual
golf outing on Tuesday, May 6 at the Tieras Creek County Club. This
year's keynote speaker was Athletic Director Ron Mason. This club
has an endowed student scholarship fund valued at over $100,000.00.
There are 1,836 alumni in Orange County; 214 are MSUAA members

The MSU Alumni Club of Greater St. Louis held its annual board meeting
and reception on Wednesday, May 28, at the Viking Conference Center in St.
Louis. This year's keynote speaker was Dr. Wolfgang Bauer, chairperson
of the Physics and Astronomy Department. More than 60 guests attended
the event as Dr Bauer discussed the SOAR telescope project and the new Biophysical
Sciences building on campus. There are than 1200 Spartans in Greater
St Louis; 127 are MSUAA members

The MSU Alum Club of West Michigan held its fifth annual Steve Smith
Charity Challenge on Monday, July 14. Among the guests were Steve
Smith, Athletic Director Ron Mason and Executive Director Keith A. Williams.
Steve has helped raise more than $150,000.00 in five years for student scholarships
at MSU, Detroit Pershing High School and RIF (Reading is Fundamental) at
this signature alumni club event.

The MSU Alumni Club of the Eastern Upper Peninsula held its third
annual Antique Boat Tour and Scholarship picnic on Saturday, August 2, in
Hessel, MI at the home of club co-founders Bud and Mary Search. Guests
had an opportunity to take a cruise through the Les Chenaux Islands of Lake
Huron in anti Chris Craft powerboats before enjoying a summer BBQ on the
beach. The event brought nearly 35 Spartans together.

David Brown, Assistant Director for Groups, presented the 106th Alumni Club
Charter to the Quad Cities Alumni Club (Davenport, IA and Moline,
IL) More than 30 guests attended the event at the Front Street Brewery
on the Mississippi River on Saturday, August 9. This new club
has 162 alumni in its club boundaries; 35 are members of the MSU Alumni
Association
