Dear
MSUAA Regional Clubs, Constituent Groups and National Board Members:
You know that Big Ten Basketball season is in full swing when MSU meets arch-rival
Michigan TWICE in one week!
Many MSUAA Regional Clubs will be hosting
pre-Super Bowl TV parties this Sunday as the Spartans meet the Wolverines
on National TV in one of the men's basketball team's most anticipated games
of the year. It's going to be a tough one as Tom Izzo takes the team
to a decidedly un-friendly Crisler Arena in Ann Arbor. You have to give
credit to the University of Michigan: They liked our student Izzone
(part of the MSUAA's Student Alumni Foundation) so well, they've copied
the concept with their own "Maize Rage". We've heard of club parties
from coast-to-coast, from the MSU Alumni Clubs of San Diego, Dallas-Ft Worth, West Michigan, Fort Meyers (FL),
Wisconsin, Manistee County, Pittsburgh, New York City and Boston. Tip-off is 1:00 PM Eastern Time
on CBS. But wait... there's more!
Fresh
off a stunning win over #10 Minnesota, The Red-Hot Spartan
Women's Basketball Team meets Michigan on Thursday, January 30,
at the Breslin Center. As one newspaper
reporter noted, the MSU women are making the Breslin an unpleasant stop for
other Big Ten teams. Head Coach Joanne P. McCallie and her team
are drawing larger crowds at home, and media are taking note. Folks
in Michigan will be able to hear Coach P on a special one-hour radio broadcast
from Tripper's in the Lansing-based Frandor Shopping Center on Wednesday,
January 29 at 8:00 PM. Plenty of game tickets are still available -
and for out-of-state clubs, the game will be carried by the Fox Sports
Network.
Tony Mauro, president of the MSU Alumni Club of Miami-Ft. Lauderdale says that
basketball is an important part of a special club reception in Boca Raton
on Tuesday, February 19. It's a special gathering to watch the Spartans
take on Illinois in basketball. If you're in the area, drop by to say
hi to MSU Athletic Director Ron Mason and
Women's Head Golf Coach Stacy Slobodnik. The
reception - co-sponsored by the MSU Alumni Association and the Ralph
Young Fund - is at Khaki's Bar and Grille
on West Palmetto Park. The next morning, alumni and friends have a chance
to golf with Ron and Stacy at the Diplomat in Hallendale. For more information,
go to the club's web site, http://southflorida.msualum.com/
There's plenty of basketball season left, but you can count on a lot of Spartans
travelling to Chicago for the Big Ten Men's Basketball Tournament in
March. The MSUAA, in partnership with the Ralph Young Fund, are hosting
the OFFICIAL pre-game pep rally at the Downtown Marriott, located at
540 North Michigan Avenue. It's from 7:30 to 9:30 PM on Thursday, March
13, and will feature a number of great MSU personalities, including Head
Coach Tom Izzo, MSUAA Executive Director Keith A. Williams, the
MSU Cheerleaders, and the Spartan Brass. More information
and details at a later date.
