Dear
MSUAA Regional Clubs, Constituent Groups and National Board Members:
Happy New Year from the MSU Alumni Association! Much is happening
on campus, from the return of students for the new semester, to a new head
coach to lead Spartan Football into a new era. The University will also
be celebrating academic excellence with its annual Faculty Awards Convocation
in just a few short weeks.
John L. Smith is the only the 23rd head coach for Spartan Football.
Smith, hired from the Universality of Louisville, has 110 career wins and
11 of his 14 teams have participated in post-season play. He ranks as
number 14 among active NCAA Division I-A coaches. Smith has already
appointed his coaching staff and is landing recruits for the fall season.

Just before the MSU-Oklahoma men's basketball game this past Saturday, The
MSU Alumni Association hosted a pre-game pep rally and reception with head
coach Tom Izzo prior to the All Sports Tournament at the new Ford Center
in downtown Oklahoma City. Co-sponsored by the MSU
Alumni Club of Dallas-Fort Worth, the event was a featured "kick-off"
for our newly activating MSU Alumni Club of Central
Oklahoma. Doug McNiven is the acting president of
the club. The MSU Alumni Club of Dallas-Fort Worth (Chris Horner,
President) and the MSU Alumni Club of Kansas City
(Tim Cummings, President) purchased blocks of tickets and arranged
for their club members to travel by bus to the event. Spartans drove
in from as far away as Arkansas to be part of the event, including Dr.
Ron Warren - an alum and professor of Mass Communication at the University
of Arkansas, and Larry Alterman, former president of the MSU Alumni Club of New York City. Larry now
resides in Little Rock as a representative for the Fuji Film Corporation.
More than 300 alumni and friends attended the family-oriented event, including
members of the official University athletic traveling party and parents of
basketball team members. Among the notables at the party were retired MSU
Athletic Director Doug Weaver and his wife Nancy, along with
6 members of the Weaver family.

Bob Rorich, President of the MSU Alumni Club of Manistee County, tells us the club
is holding its annual elections on Thursday, January 9 at a special event
at the 440 Restaurant in downtown Manistee. Bob has arranged for a great
assortment of hors doeuvres and beverages, along with some great raffle prizes
for club board members. Following the meeting, guests will adjourn to
the Benchwarmers pub to watch the Spartans take on Ohio State in their Big
Ten Opener.
Know a Spartan in Charleston, South
Carolina? Kristine Crawford, class of '94, is looking
for other alumni and friends to activate a new regional club representing
Spartans in a four-county area. Kristine will be sending an introductory
letter to more than 200 Spartan households in the Charleston area. For
more information, contact Kristine by e-mail at kcrawford@ams.fm
Kristine would love to hear from other club board officers with tips on events
to bring Spartans together.
